Set up a minimum project template

The smallest project template that gives a new project real structure.

A quote can still create a project without a template, but it'll be a bare shell. A minimum project template gives the crew a real plan to follow.

Before you start

You need the Owner or Admin role.

The minimum checklist

  1. A Project template exists with at least one stage and one step. See Build a project template.
  2. If the template has a Work Order step, it points at a real Work type. See Set up work types and report types.
  3. No duplicate step names and no broken or circular dependencies between steps; the template won't save otherwise.
  4. The template is switched Enabled. New templates start disabled.

See Finish, enable, and publish a project template for what else is worth checking (who owns each step, whether a step is required to close out the project) before you connect it to a quote.

Connect it to a quote

A project template only fires automatically once a quote type points at it. See Connect quotes to project templates. You can also start a project from the template with New Project, no quote needed. See Start a project without a quote.

Check it worked

Settings → Project templates shows the template as Enabled, with its stage and item count.
